Purpose of Position

This is a senior level position that exists to provide technical leadership and management in the area of manufacturing technology research and development (R&D) with a primary focus on hard machining, grinding (all forms) and other surface finishing technologies, automation and controls, and metrology. The position will ensure that the appropriate core competencies are maintained and developed to provide the necessary support to the business units (BUs) in maintenance of current products, development of new products as well as staying abreast of new technologies that could impact the business or present future opportunities.  In addition, the position is responsible for the management and oversight of our global gauge calibration facilities as well as providing general metrology services.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Leading and supervising the Manufacturing Technology & Metrology R&D Group.
  2. Leading the creation and maintenance of  a 5-year roadmap of manufacturing technology R&D tactics that are aligned with the company’s overall strategy and that deliver value across multiple time horizon periods.
  3. Developing new supplier partners for manufacturing investment and ensuring maintenance of talent and capabilities that sustain and further our strategic, technical core competencies.
  4. Driving project rigor, adherence to project plans, creation of appropriate metrics and other tools to characterize the overall ROI for this group.
  5. Functioning as the primary contact with the BU’s for advanced machining, finishing, assembly and metrology technologies.
  6. Leading development efforts to ensure that the BUs have access to a full portfolio of cost-effective finishing technologies for all combinations of product type, size, complexity and production volume.
  7. Partnering with product design and development to ensure design for manufacture practices are successfully implemented.
  8. Directing efforts to assess our consistency of process implementations globally and recommending/implementing knowledge based engineering (KBE) processes as deemed appropriate.
  9. Maintaining awareness of external technology developments and justifying their investigation as appropriate.

Technical/Functional Skills Required

  • Knowledge of bearing/gear (or similar component) manufacturing operations and requirements for successful deployment of new technologies
  • Track record of significant accomplishment in undertaking/managing advanced technical projects
  • Proven ability to influence internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated aptitude for leadership/management
  • Expertise in relevant manufacturing technology fundamentals

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering and 15 years of experience in manufacturing engineering (with either technology-development and/or operations focus) and 5 years of technical management
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering (preferred)
  • PhD in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering (preferred)
