Purpose and Scope

Lead the Asheboro operations team in utilizing Lean Manufacturing techniques to maximize

the profitability of The Timken Company, Process Industries and Asheboro Plant by achieving

the financial goals of the business and satisfying customer needs through the manufacturing of

bearing products and rolled rings. This position is an active part of the Asheboro Leadership

Team.

Responsibilities

1.  Business Plan and Tactics

a. Support and achieve goals set in the Industrial Large Bore group, market segments, and Asheboro business plan.
b. Identify and complete strategic and tactical direction items.  Monitor and report milestone progress monthly and quarterly as 
outlined in the Asheboro Business Plan. Ensure accountability and achievement of tactics.
c. Communicate Large Bore business, market segments, and Asheboro business direction, goals, objectives,
and tactics in terms that are understandable to all associates for alignment purposes.
d. Manage the operations team (production manager and supervision) providing clear direction and guidance enabling them
to achieve daily production goals. 

2.  Customer Service

a. Utilize lean manufacturing principles and work with the operations team and production control team to ensure structural changes are made that will ensure 95 percent or better OTD within all flow paths.
b. Ensure that pieces produced match the timing, class, code, and quantity requested with the highest yield in the first
time, as committed to with the yearly Business Plans.
c. Identify, support, and help implement lean manufacturing processes designed to eliminate waste and improve the efficiency of the plant, reduce costs and reduce lead times.
d. Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of production reporting.  Develop a mechanism to feedback any changes to
rates, routings, setup times, utilization, scrap etc. to the master database. 
e. Work closely with the Supply Chain Management area to efficiently use and improve the availability of component parts for manufacturing operations while minimizing inventory days.

3.  Quality Advancement

a. Meet all quality goals set for the Asheboro Plant.
b. Monitor scrap and repair daily/weekly/monthly.
c. Identify and implement programs to reduce the cost of non-conformance and minimize customer complaints.
d. Ensure that procedures are in effect that maintain and continually improve the capability of the workforce.
e. Ensure that all products are produced to performance code specifications.
f. Identify and support the implementation of programs that reduce process variability.
g. Identify lean project opportunities to support your Business Plan needs, and drive to apply the right skills.

4.  Unit Cost

a. Achieve productivity goals.
b. Meet production needs as specified by Supply Chain Management and Marketing areas to meet customer demand.
c. Identify and implement structural changes to assure continuous improvements in labor productivity, salary/administration, fixed and variable business expenses, and C-O-P line items.
d. Manage changes in production requirements to minimize the disruption of the labor force while maintaining or improving productivity levels.
e. Monitor weekly workforce scheduling (salary and hourly) to meet production and productivity goals.
f. Manage in-process inventory to keep it at a minimum, but still have sufficient inventory to insure an uninterrupted production flow in grind, inspection and assembly, and shipping departments. 
g. Ensure that adequate quantities of incoming stock are available to grind and resolve any problems with Supply Chain Management.
h. Assist the production manager and supervision in managing the shift assignments of process technicians to achieve a balanced workload and maximum production potential.
i. Meet Business Plan unit cost commitments yr. on yr.
j. Meet packed Output goals for the plant.

5.  Fixed and Variable Expenses

a. Monitor tooling, miscellaneous supplies, abrasive and packaging consumption and assist Procurement/Logistics in changes requiring improved pricing/delivery/inventory arrangements.
b. Identify, support, and help implement programs designed to reduce tooling and supply consumption.
c. Proactively manage plant capacity, manning strategies, outsource strategies and operations to lower fixed cost break-even point.

6.  Associate Relations

a. Maintain a safe work environment for associates.  Ensure that safety awareness topics are communicated regularly and that
the entire operations team is involved in monthly safety audits. 
b. Create an environment in which a team-oriented workforce can thrive. This includes coaching, training and applying the team operating practices.
c. Regularly meet with all associates and make regular visits to the midnight and afternoon shifts.
d. Use the team management concepts, and other techniques to involve all associates in executing our business plans and tactics and to institutionalize continuous improvement and resolve specific problems.
e. Use the Talent Management Process to provide direction and enhance the performance of salary associates.

7. Lean Manufacturing

a. Fulfill the role of site Lean Leader for the plant.  Interface with corporate lean group to understand and maintain requirements for lean leader role. Ensure the lean strategy is communicated to plant leadership.  Become the lean expert for the plant.  Assure lean language and lean culture is being implemented throughout the plant.
b. Manage the lean vision (ideal state) for the facility.  Ensure alignment between the lean vision and business plan goals.  Identify the strategic and tactical direction for the lean initiatives at the plant.  Coordinate resources to manage lean initiatives. Ensure that the cadence management system is in place to sustain lean implementations.
c. Develop other associates in the plant to attain lean leader certifications.
d. Utilize and continue to develop a cross-functional support team of lean leaders within the facility.  Identify annual and long term lean training and education requirements.
e. Work with other facilities within the company to share lean best practices and resources.
f. Continue to grow as a lean leader by gaining lean knowledge and capabilities along with practical applications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in related field and at least 7-10 years or Master's degree in related field and 5-7 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in related field and at least 10-12 years or Master's degree in related field and 7-10 years experience
