Principal Customer Engineer - Aerospace

Purpose & Scope

This position works with sales to develop and influence technical relationships at external Aerospace customers.  Applications served include satellites, rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft, guidance systems, etc., in both civil and military platforms. 

This role works with external customers to solve application problems.  This includes translating customer needs into new applications for Timken bearings and related products, modeling of customer applications, and occasional on-site or remote, real-time application problem-solving with external customers. 

The senior customer engineer models a variety of customer applications and performs bearing analyses using proprietary Timken software and other programs.  The role works cooperatively with Research & Development when solutions require tools beyond the limits of currently-available analysis software.

This role provides engineering and technical support to field sales and other internal customers. 

Responsibilities

  • Support sales to develop technical and engineering relationships at key customers. 
  • Support the Sales Process: Present technical information to customers. Assist Sales Engineer in their effort to influence buying decisions of customers. Target results to known customer needs, adding value to the customer and to Timken.
  • Work with external customers to support new opportunities.  Model customer applications for bearing selection and analysis of bearing performance.  Advise external customers on bearing selection and arrangement, life calculations, sealing, mounting methods, preload, fitting practice and lubricant suggestions, etc.
  • Work directly with external customers to solve application issues.  Perform advanced damage analysis.  Provide customer ready written or verbal responses to external requests for damage analysis results.
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Conduct project-related application risk assessments. Generate DFMEAs for existing application types and contribute to PFMEA when appropriate.  Apply standard processes and procedures with respect to risk analysis.
  • New Business Development: Submit ideas for improvements and enhancements to existing or new products.
  • Conduct industry or technology research, and identify trends. Share observations and conclusions with New Business Development associates to guide future development.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Serve as instructor for technical training classes both internal and external. Coach/mentor new engineering associates.  
  • Generate technical articles, catalogs and brochures.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years related work experience or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years related work experience. Minimum years related work experience should ideally include 2 years of experience in anti-friction products and system related solutions.

Aerospace Experience Preferred.

Candidate must be a US citizen or permanent resident US.

Candidate must be willing to travel domestically, up to 25%.
